On April 7, Alaska Bible College had the privilege of co-hosting the Northwest Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Missiological Society.  Missiologists from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington gathered to discuss this year’s theme of “Mission and Evangelism in a Secularizing World.”

Western Seminary in Portland, OR provided the main conference venue, and Alaskan delegates were able to participate through a live two-way video feed between ABC and Western Seminary.  One of ABC’s own professors, John Ferch, gave a presentation titled “Secularization and Social Control in Alaskan Eskimo Culture: Shifting from Fear/Power to Honor/Shame.”  The paper explored how the Yupik and Inupiat cultures of Alaska have been impacted by the advent of Western secularization, and how the Gospel can offer hope in this context.
