A history of the Matanuska Valley

Rooted in new beginnings.

Palmer’s modern story was shaped by the 1935 Matanuska Colony, when farming families came north to establish new homes and cultivate the valley’s fertile soil.

That agricultural legacy still gives Palmer much of its character: practical, resilient, community-minded, and deeply connected to the land. Today, the town serves as a welcoming center for the wider Mat-Su Valley.
